Cordyceps for Dogs: Benefits, Safety, and Dosing

Cordyceps militaris is one of the most studied functional mushrooms in modern nutrition research, and one of the least understood ingredients in the dog supplement aisle. Here is a clear look at what cordyceps is, how it works, and why we put 200 mg of it in every joint chew we make.

You probably know about glucosamine. Maybe chondroitin. If your dog has ever stiffened up after a long walk or paused at the bottom of the stairs, you have likely scanned the supplement aisle and seen the same handful of ingredients on every label.

That is the longevity gap in miniature. Human wellness added adaptogens, probiotics and standardized mushroom extracts over the last decade. Dog supplements mostly stayed put. We put 200 mg of Cordyceps militaris extract, standardized to 40% or greater polysaccharides, in every joint chew because the circulation and energy research fits aging joints.

What Cordyceps Is, and Why Dog Parents Should Care

Cordyceps is a genus of fungi with a long history in traditional wellness practices. For centuries, practitioners of traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine used cordyceps to support vitality, endurance, and overall resilience. The species most commonly used in modern supplementation is Cordyceps militaris, which can be cultivated under controlled conditions to ensure consistent quality and standardized potency.

What makes Cordyceps militaris interesting from a scientific perspective is its unique profile of bioactive compounds. The two most studied are cordycepin (a nucleoside analog of adenosine, also known as 3'-deoxyadenosine) and polysaccharides, particularly beta glucans[2]. These are the compounds researchers focus on when investigating how cordyceps supports various aspects of health.

For dogs, the research suggests cordyceps plays a supporting role in the systems that keep your dog moving and resilient as they age.

How Cordyceps Supports Your Dog's Joint Health

When most people think about joint support for dogs, they think about cartilage. Glucosamine and chondroitin get all the attention because they are associated with cartilage structure and cushioning. They matter, which is why our Hip & Joint formula includes 500 mg of Glucosamine HCl and 150 mg of Chondroitin Sulfate per chew.

But joint health is more than cartilage. Healthy joints also depend on good circulation, adequate oxygen delivery to the surrounding tissues, and an inflammatory response that works as it should. This is where cordyceps comes in.

Circulation and Oxygen Delivery

Research on Cordyceps militaris suggests that its bioactive compounds, particularly cordycepin and adenosine derivatives, may support healthy blood flow and oxygen utilization. A comprehensive 2024 review published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology examined cordyceps and its bioactive components and noted their potential to support blood perfusion in laboratory and animal models[5].

For a dog with aging joints, this matters. Healthy circulation means the nutrients your dog is consuming, whether from food or supplements, can reach the joint tissues where they are needed. It also means the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding those joints are better supported.

You can put the best fuel in a car, but if the fuel lines are not delivering it efficiently, the engine still struggles. Cordyceps supports the delivery system.

Energy Metabolism and Endurance

One of the most studied properties of Cordyceps militaris is its relationship to energy production at the cellular level. A 2020 study published in Mycobiology, the journal of the Korean Society of Mycology, found that Cordyceps militaris extract had an effect on biomarkers related to the ATP generation pathway in laboratory animals, suggesting a mechanism for supporting cellular energy production rather than masking muscle fatigue[1]. ATP is the molecule your dog's cells use as their primary energy currency.

For aging dogs, or dogs who tire more quickly than they used to, this is relevant. Supporting cellular energy production does not mean your dog will suddenly act like a puppy again. It does mean the biological systems responsible for stamina and recovery have the nutritional support they need to function well.

This is also why cordyceps has a long history of use among human athletes and in traditional practices focused on endurance and vitality. The same principles apply to dogs, with formulas and doses designed specifically for canine biology.

Supporting a Healthy Inflammatory Response

Polysaccharides from Cordyceps militaris, particularly its linear (1→3)-β-D-glucan, have been studied for their role in supporting a balanced immune and inflammatory response[4]. Laboratory and rodent studies have explored how cordyceps polysaccharides may help the body maintain a normal inflammatory process, with the beta glucan fraction identified as one of the most relevant compounds[2][3].

For joints, a healthy inflammatory response is essential. When the body's inflammatory process works the way it should, joint tissues handle the everyday wear of normal activity more easily. This is one reason we pair cordyceps with Reishi (another functional mushroom with complementary properties) in our Hip & Joint formula. Together they support the body's natural balance from a different angle than glucosamine and chondroitin alone.

Why a Standardized Cordyceps Extract Matters (and What 40% Polysaccharides Means)

Not all cordyceps supplements for dogs are created equal. This is worth a moment.

When you see "cordyceps" on a pet supplement label, it can mean a lot of different things. It could be raw mushroom powder, which varies in potency depending on growing conditions, harvest timing, and processing. It could be mycelium grown on grain, which often contains more starch than actual mushroom compounds. Or it could be a standardized extract with a guaranteed minimum level of the bioactive compounds that actually do the work.

Our Hip & Joint formula uses Cordyceps militaris extract standardized to 40% or greater polysaccharides, and an independent lab tests every batch. The polysaccharide fraction includes the beta glucans and other compounds researchers have studied for immune support and structure function properties[2].

Standardization is the difference between a meaningful amount of bioactive compounds and a label decoration. If a brand does not tell you the polysaccharide content of its mushroom ingredient, you have no way of knowing whether you are getting a concentrated extract or a filler that happens to be derived from mushrooms.

We list ours because you should be able to check our work.

Cordyceps in a Joint Formula That Covers Several Pathways

One ingredient, no matter how well studied, is rarely the whole answer. Joint health runs on several pathways, and it deserves a formula that covers them.

Our Daily Hip & Joint Support combines 8 actives, each at a meaningful dose:

Ingredient Per Chew
Glucosamine HCl (Shellfish) 500 mg
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) 200 mg
Cordyceps militaris (≥40% polysaccharides) 200 mg
Reishi / Ganoderma lingzhi (≥35% polysaccharides) 200 mg
Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus) 150 mg
Chondroitin Sulfate 150 mg
Eggshell Membrane 100 mg
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) 50 mg

Each ingredient is there for a reason. Glucosamine, chondroitin, and eggshell membrane provide the connective tissue foundation: cartilage structure, elasticity, and naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. MSM supports joint comfort and a balanced inflammatory response. Green Lipped Mussel adds omega 3 fatty acids and naturally occurring glycosaminoglycans. Vitamin C supports collagen synthesis and antioxidant activity. And Cordyceps and Reishi bring the functional mushroom layer that the rest of the category is still catching up to: circulation, cellular energy, and a balanced immune and inflammatory response.

Every dose is printed on the label.

This is what we believe canine joint support should look like: a formula that addresses joint health from several angles instead of one. Cordyceps and Reishi bring functional mushroom science into a category that has relied on the same basic ingredients for over a decade, and they work alongside glucosamine and chondroitin rather than in place of them.

What the Research Says (and What It Does Not)

We want to be straightforward about the current state of cordyceps research as it relates to dogs.

The majority of published studies on Cordyceps militaris have been conducted in vitro (in laboratory settings), in animal models (primarily rodents), or in human subjects. These studies have investigated a range of potential supportive roles, including immune function[3], energy metabolism[1], cardiovascular health[5], and inflammatory balance[2][4]. The findings are encouraging and provide a strong scientific rationale for including cordyceps in canine wellness formulas.

Large scale clinical trials specifically on dogs are limited. This is true for most functional mushroom ingredients in the pet supplement space and, frankly, for many conventional pet supplement ingredients as well.

What we can say is this: the bioactive compounds in Cordyceps militaris (cordycepin, polysaccharides, adenosine) are well characterized. Their mechanisms of action are increasingly understood. The traditional use of cordyceps spans centuries across multiple cultures. We included cordyceps in our formula because the convergence of modern research and that traditional record pointed clearly in one direction.

We did not choose it because it sounds exotic. We chose it because the science suggested it could support joint health in ways standard formulas were missing.

How to Give Cordyceps to Your Dog

If your dog is taking our Daily Hip & Joint Support, they are already getting 200 mg of standardized Cordyceps militaris extract in every chew. Dosing is based on weight:

Weight Daily Serving
Up to 25 lb 1 Soft Chew
26 to 50 lb 2 Soft Chews
51 to 75 lb 3 Soft Chews
Over 75 lb 4 Soft Chews

Give the chews with food to support absorption and reduce any chance of stomach sensitivity. Most dogs take the chews without any fuss, but if your dog is picky, you can break them into smaller pieces and mix them into their meal.

As with any supplement, consistency matters. Give it three months of daily chews with food, then judge it against the small things only you would notice.

If your dog is on medication or has an existing health condition, talk to your vet before adding any supplement to their routine.

A Note on Cordyceps Safety in Dogs

Cordyceps militaris has a strong safety profile in the existing body of research. A 90 day subchronic toxicity study in rats published in 2018 administered Cordyceps militaris mycelium powder at doses of 2,000, 3,000, and 4,000 mg per kg body weight per day for 90 consecutive days, with no abnormalities in clinical signs, body weight, feed intake, hematology, or histopathology[6]. A 2024 acute and subacute toxicity study in mice found no signs of toxicity in the acute test at 2,000 mg per kg[7]. A separate 2024 toxicological assessment of organic Cordyceps militaris and Reishi powders found no acute toxicity, no subchronic toxicity in rats at the highest dose tested, and no genotoxic potential[8].

Our Daily Hip & Joint Support is crafted in the USA with premium domestic and global ingredients, and an independent lab tests every batch.

Cautions from our label that are worth noting: do not use prior to surgery and during pregnancy. Safety in pregnant or breeding animals has not been established. If your dog's condition worsens or does not improve, stop use and consult a veterinarian. Veterinary examination is recommended before use. If you have questions about whether this formula is right for your dog, your vet is the best resource.

The Bottom Line on Cordyceps for Dogs

Cordyceps is not a trend. It is a functional mushroom with centuries of traditional use and a growing body of modern research supporting its role in circulation, energy metabolism, and immune balance. For dogs, particularly those dealing with the everyday realities of aging joints, it offers what the standard glucosamine formula does not: support for the systems that keep joints nourished, oxygenated, and resilient.

We included it in our Daily Hip & Joint Support because we asked the same question we ask about every ingredient: is this good enough for our dog? After looking at the research, the traditional record, and the way cordyceps complements the other seven ingredients in the formula, the answer was clear.

Your dog's joints are more than cartilage. We take advances in human longevity science and translate them into formulas made specifically for dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cordyceps for Dogs

Is cordyceps safe for dogs?

Cordyceps militaris has a well established safety profile in available research, including a 90 day rat toxicity study and an acute toxicity study in mice that found no signs of toxicity at 2,000 mg per kg[6][7]. As with any new supplement, consult your vet, especially if your dog is on medication, pregnant, or nursing. An independent lab tests every batch.

What are the benefits of cordyceps for dogs?

Research on Cordyceps militaris points to several supportive roles: healthy circulation, oxygen delivery to muscles and tissues, energy metabolism at the cellular level, and a balanced inflammatory response. For aging dogs with stiffening joints, those underlying systems matter as much as cartilage itself.

How long does it take for cordyceps to work in dogs?

Plan on three months of daily use. Keep watching whatever you noticed first, the pause at the stairs or the slow rise from the bed, and judge at 90 days.

What is the difference between Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris?

Cordyceps sinensis is a species harvested wild at high altitudes, primarily in the Himalayas, making it extremely rare and expensive. Cordyceps militaris can be cultivated under controlled conditions, which allows for consistent quality, standardized potency, and sustainable production. Both species contain cordycepin and other bioactive compounds. Cordyceps militaris is generally considered to contain higher concentrations of cordycepin. Our formula uses Cordyceps militaris extract standardized to 40% or greater polysaccharides.

What is the right cordyceps dosage for dogs?

In our Daily Hip & Joint Support, each chew delivers 200 mg of Cordyceps militaris extract. The total daily amount depends on your dog's weight: 1 chew up to 25 lb, 2 chews from 26 to 50 lb, 3 chews from 51 to 75 lb, and 4 chews for dogs over 75 lb. If you are using a different cordyceps product, follow that product's weight based dosing, and ask your vet if you are unsure.

Can I give cordyceps to my puppy?

Our Daily Hip & Joint Support is formulated for adult dogs. For any supplement decision involving a puppy, we recommend speaking with your vet first to determine what is appropriate for their age and developmental stage.

Does cordyceps interact with medications?

Cordyceps may interact with certain medications, including immunosuppressants and blood thinners. Our Hip & Joint label specifically advises not using the product prior to surgery or during pregnancy, which is consistent with research on cordyceps and platelet activity. If your dog is on any prescription medication, consult your veterinarian before starting a new supplement.

Why does Ivaros use a standardized cordyceps extract instead of raw powder?

Raw mushroom powder varies in potency depending on growing conditions, harvest timing, and processing. A standardized extract carries a minimum level of bioactive compounds, in our case 40% or greater polysaccharides, and that figure is printed on the label. It means the cordyceps in your dog's chew is a measured concentration of the compounds researchers have actually studied rather than mushroom material of unknown potency.

How much cordyceps is in each Ivaros Hip & Joint chew?

Each chew contains 200 mg of Cordyceps militaris extract standardized to 40% or greater polysaccharides. The amount is listed on our label alongside every other active ingredient and its exact dose.
